An 1858 American Bible Society bible which originally belonged to La Grange, Georgia resident Mary Morgan White. La Grange, Georgia was the only locale in the South/Confederacy where the women rose up with arms to defend their town - the women of LaGrange given the title. On the American Civil War Forums (see the second image), we read.
Every capable woman of LaGrange, married or single, enlisted as a Nancy Hart. And the captain of this group was Mrs. You can see (attached) the front flyleaf of the bible has a rare La Grange, Geo. And the name Mary M.
White's Book, La Grange, Ga. Showing the first owner based in La Grange. A family member some time later identified the owner as "Mary Morgan White" in pencil.
In a 1904 interview with Ladies' Home Journal, Nancy Hill Morgan (founder of the Nancy Harts) spoke of the founding of the militia with Mary Alfred Heard in which it was declared. This city of women and children is absolutely at the mercy of Heaven.Beyond the guns they could muster, and learn how to shoot, their Bibles would have helped sustain them. Mary Morgan White's beloved bible is well-worn and it's complete as shown. So the ladies sent out the call.
The first meeting of the women's militia was held at a schoolhouse located on the property of LaGrange lawyer and then-Confederate Senator Benjamin Hill. A small slip of paper found in the bible suggests the book came into possession of a M. At some point in the 20th century? - and per a note on the front flyleaf later became a part of a Kentucky bible collection.
Physical Size: approximately 6.5" x 9.5". There are not believed to be any missing or completely detached pages. Some possibly weak areas in the binding, where the book has been opened and the pages laid back for reading; still, thought to be strong. The Bible has not been abused, as there is little or no scribbling, drawings, or markings to deface the book. (see photos) There are a few dog-eared pages, but nothing significant to mention pertaining to the physical condition of the content pages.
Really IS a Good Old BIBLE. This book could be restored without great difficulty.
