Published in 1894 by Century Magazine. Published by The Century Co. The Century Company published articles written by various generals and officers, both Union and Confederate in the early to mid 1880s. These proved to be very popular as the war had been over for nearly twenty years and people were interested in remembering this traumatic time.

The articles were first person accounts and as such make very interesting reading for those with a desire to learn this history. The articles were compiled into a four volume set of large format books that proved very popular as well. This volume was the condensed version in a more horizontal format with larger pictures.

The book was meant to satisfy the demand for a less expensive version of the work. 10 7/8 x 13 1/2 inches. These books were originally bound in several styles, some cloth and some leather, both full and 3/4 (leather spine and corners). The leather used had a very acidic tanning process that leads to a condition called red-rot. Nearly all (likely all) now have substantially deteriorated.

Spines are missing or badly crumbled. Boards are loose or missing. The book was originally bound in 3/4 leather.

It has been rebound and recased into its original cover with new leather spine and corners, The texblock has been rebound and is now very strong with similarly strong hinges. This large and heavy book is in very good condition with some restoration. It has been rebound and recasted into its original cover that has been restored with new calf leather spine and corners that have been dyed to match the original leather. Much of the original spine has had the leather consolidated and then laid back onto the new leather.

The spine label is new. The pebbled cloth with the gilding on the front board was well as the cloth on the rear board are original to the book The endpapers were retained, but back with stronger acid free paper. The pastedowns were made up of new heavy blue and gray paper. Some of the page edges at the front and back of the book have had some repairs to small tears or reinforcement at the edges.

All work was done conservatively with no use of acidic papers or tape. I have provided many pictures of the paper and pages so you can see what this looks like.

The pages and all illustrations are very clean-almost no foxing and no waterstains, grease spots, etc. The paper shows mild toning for the age of the book. All pages, illustrations, endpapers, etc. Are original and present with the book.
