Woman's Work in the Civil War: A Record of Heroism, Patriotism and Patience. With an Introduction by Henry W. Louis: Zeigler, McCurdy & Co. Illustrated with sixteen steel engravings.
Publisher's original purple cloth, blind-stamped boards, gilt spine lettering. A substantial and influential postwar compilation documenting the contributions of women to the Union cause-nurses, organizers, fundraisers, relief workers, and field volunteers-presented here in its first edition. Brockett and Vaughan's work remains one of the earliest book-length tributes to women's wartime labor and devotion, featuring biographical accounts and dramatic engravings of notable figures such as Annie Etheridge and Mrs.An important Civil War-era women's history source. A well-worn but complete example. Cloth heavily rubbed and mottled overall with significant fading; spine cloth worn with fraying at head and tail and a few small losses. Front hinge cracked; rear hinge tender. Plates show moderate to heavy foxing, as typical for this title and era; tissue guards present though toned.
Despite exterior wear, the steel engravings remain strong and cleanly impressed. A solid, serviceable copy of a cornerstone Civil War women's history volume, increasingly scarce in original cloth.
