G, 27th MS Walthall's Brigade and is so signed by him in pencil on the rear fly (see photo). The 27th Infantry Regiment was organized in November and December, 1861 with men recruited in the counties of Oktibbeha, Leake, Covington, Jasper, and Simpson.

After serving in Florida and Kentucky, then unit was assigned to General Walthall's and Brantly's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It took an active part in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, moved with Hood into Tennessee, and fought in North Carolina.

It surrendered on April 26, 1865. This extraordinary book presents a comprehensive history of Mississippi, including its native population and history, early exploration and settlements, frontier and territory history, becoming a state, its early government and history and more. The fully Table of Contents is shown so you know the focus of the book. The book discusses Mississippi's early history, Indian Tribes, Pierre Le Moyne De Iberville, Fort Maurepaus, Old Biloxi, the First White Settles in Mississippi, the Making of Mississippi, the Territorial Government, Biographies of Governors of Mississippi Territory.

It discusses Mississippi boundaries, Inhabitants of Mississippi in 1816, and its Statehood. The book contains Biographies of the Governors of the State of Mississippi, as well as Supreme Court Justices of the State of Mississippi, and discusses the Judiciary of Mississippi.

The book discusses its State Institutions, including The University of Mississippi, Mississippi Industrial Institute and College, The Mississippi A&M College, The Mississippi Normal College, The Alcorn A&M College, The Magnolia- State Flower of Mississippi, the History of First Mississippi Infantry, and provides statistics for Mississippi. The book also discusses the Legislative Department; it provides Sketches (biographies) of Senators, Sketches of Members of the House, The City of Gulfport, County Government and provides biographies of County Officers. Many of these biographies are of Civil War veterans. The book contains a complete history and unit roster of the First Mississippi Infantry.

The book presents considerable Confederate content and many useful biographical sketches and information related to the history of the State, the Confederacy and Federal positions from or in the state. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE - CONDITION This original, first edition, antique book is in excellent overall condition. This book belonged to Capt. G, 27th MS Walthall's Brigade and is so signed by him in pencil on the rear fly.

The book is clean and it has solid binding. The exterior is clean with no bumping or discernible edge wear, but has light rubbing and some speckling to the spine as shown.

The book comes protected in a clear, acid-free, Mylar dust jacket (see photos #3). The interior is clean and the pages are in nice overall condition, but the book is missing the front fly and some pages have light edge chipping. There is some writing on the front, inside cover about other Civil War books and some light markings throughout the book related to certain aspects of the information and some of the Confederate veterans in the book. The book has no stamps, pasteboards, foxing or other markings; it is not an ex-library book.

The book has solid binding throughout; it has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book contains 1023 pages. It contains a colored frontispiece illustration of the Mississippi State Flag, and is loaded with portraits, photographs, maps and historic documents related to Mississippi history. In addition to the history of the State of Mississippi, in contains considerable history related to Mississippi during the Civil War, and considerable Confederate content and biographical information.
