His writings, research and letter collection on the battle began while the Civil War was still being fought. He arrived on the field soon after the battle and spent the next 23 years talking to veterans of both armies, collecting and organizing their stories, researching reports, and organizing reunions so that monuments could be placed accurately. The War Department contracted with Bachelder for a history of the battle, which he delivered in 1886.

The work comprised 2500 pages and was accompanied by excellent maps. It was never published, and languished for over 100 years until publication of this edition, transcribed, edited, and annotated by David L. A very in-depth read mostly by actual witnesses and participants of the battle from both sides of the conflict. This out-of-print book is in excellent condition.

It comes in the original dust jacket that is protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket. This is the last copy of this book. It is out-of-print by the publisher who is out of business and will not be re-publishing it.

The book is sharp, bright and clean. It has solid binding throughout. The exterior is clean and has no wear. The pages are clean, bright white and in excellent condition. There isn't a mark in the book.

The book is illustrated and contains battle maps on the end pages and throughout the book. The dust jacket has a very, very light spotting. The book contains complete Orders of Battle for both sides and is fully indexed.
