The book presents the confidential correspondence of Gustavus Vasa Fox, Assistant Secretary of the Navy who served in that capacity during the entire Civil War. His correspondence begins with the attempted relief of Fort Sumter of which he was personally involved. In it much material is provided on the South Atlantic and west Gulf blockading squadron.

Also included are letters of L. Goldsborough concerning the expedition against Roanoke Island, North Carolina, and the campaign in the Sounds of North Carolina.

This book set provides considerable, sensitive, confidential material on these and other operations of the Federal Navy during the war, Fox's role in events, and more related to the various sieges, battles, engagements and operation of the Navy. THIS BOOK SET IS IN FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, complete, two-volume, antique book set is in exceptional condition.

It comes protected in the original, protective book boxes to help keep them that way. Only 1200 copies of this numbered, limited edition, first edition book set were published.

This is a handsome, nicely-presented set published with high-quality materials and paper by the Naval History Society. The book set is bound in light gray boards with white, vellum spines stamped in gold lettering and with an image on the cover.

The exteriors are in fine condition with no wear, bumping or rubbing. The interior is also in fine condition. The pages are clean, bright white and in excellent condition. There isn't a mark in the book set. The books have no writing, smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboards, or other markings. It is not an ex-library book set. Both books have fine binding and have no looseness or lean; all four hinges are fine. Volume I has a frontispiece illustration of Fox; Volume II has a frontispiece illustration of Admiral Farragut and a full-page portrait of Admiral Porter. Volume I has 16 (xvi) pages in introductory material and 440 pages.

Volume II contains 15 (xv) pages of introductory material and 492 pages. The Naval History Society jumbled the volumes together and never were able to match up limitation numbers, so the numbered editions don't match which is common for this set. Volume I is #943 and Volume II is #1044 of the 1200 copies published.

The book boxes have light edge wear, but are still sturdy and have done a fine job protecting the books inside. An excellent condition, limited edition, first edition book set in the original protective book boxes. CONFIDENTIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF GUSTAVUS VASA FOX.
