Brinton, Major and Surgeon U. Published by The Neale Publishing Company, 1914. This is the very scarce and collectible First Edition of this highly acclaimed account! The author served in the capacity of a brigadier surgeon in the Civil War and later as a member of General Ulysses S. Brinton was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, with an M. This is his account of'what and whom I saw, and what I was doing during those four years'. The doctor was on friendly, almost intimate, terms with Grant and was also well acquainted with Sheridan, Rosecrans, McPherson and Halleck. Brinton's narrative of his experiences is generally very carefully accurate. Brinton's journeys covered much of the country during the war years, and he faithfully recorded impressions of all that he experienced. The sum total is one of the very best memoirs written by a Federal Officer. Brinton, a renowned surgeon and able scholar, provides intimate glimpses of both Federal hospitals in the West and the principal battlefields of the East. Brinton's memoirs contain the outstanding recollections of an officer who experienced the war in the west. As a physician, Brinton had the opportunity to experience the aftermath of several major battles in the West and to make the acquaintance of important commanders. Brinton carefully recorded his wartime experiences, and although the work was composed long after the war, he accurately recalls what he had seen.

The tone is serious, the narrative is well written, and the collection contains much of interest to medical studies of the war. Condition: The book is in very good condition.

It has bookplate and markings of having once been in the library of the Historical Society of York County. (Numbers blacked out on bottom area of spine). The inside of the covers show some foxing spotting.

Tight binding; no tears of gutters or hinges. Would make a super addition to a collection.
