His majesties Declaration To all His loving Subjects: Published with the advice of His Privie Councel. Bound by Ronald Bayman in modern red calf-backed marbled paper boards. A trifle rubbed, Title page reinforced at gutter. The first edition of the response of Charles I to the House of Commons passing of the Grand Remonstrance; a petition documenting the many and varied objections to his domestic, foreign and religious policy, in vivid detail, held by his critics in Parliament.
The document carefully made no direct accusations against the king nor any individual, choosing rather to blame Roman Catholic conspiracy. Proposed solutions included a purge of officials, the expulsion of bishops from the House, and Parliament having the right of veto regarding Crown appointments.
The Grand Remonstrance was delivered to Charles on 1st December - he initially gave no response. Parliament therefore proceeded to have the document published and circulated publicly in order to force to king's hand.
Charles eventually responded on 23rd December, rejecting Parliament's proposal outright. This disagreement between Crown and State crucially drew the battle lines of the approaching Civil War. ESTC records copies at just four locations in the British Isles (Birmingham, Cambridge, Oxford, and Petyt), and a further four in North America (California, Harvard, Illinois, and Newberry).
