At the time, Senator Jefferson Davis - who went on to become the first and only president of the Confederate States during the Civil War - served as president of the Commission. The Report concludes with a letter from Robert E. Lee, a West Point graduate who later served as a Confederate general during the Civil War. The Commission was appointed to examine into the organization, system of discipline, and course of instruction of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
