Original 1879 first edition of The Annals of the War, written by leading participants from both the North and South and originally published in the Philadelphia Weekly Times. Published in Philadelphia by The Times Publishing Company. This substantial illustrated Civil War volume contains 800 pages of firsthand accounts covering major battles, commanders, military operations and political events. Subjects include Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Stonewall Jackson, General Longstreet, General Stuart, Jefferson Davis, Abraham Lincoln, the Iron-Clad Monitor, Morgan's Raid, Fort Fisher and other important Civil War topics. Bound in the original brown cloth with elaborate gilt decoration on the front cover and spine.

Approximately 9 1/2 inches tall. Condition: The gilt decoration remains bright and attractive. The binding shows rubbing and edge wear, with noticeable fraying and cloth loss at the top and bottom of the spine. Corners show wear, and the rear cover has scattered surface marks. Pages are age-toned but appear generally clean in the photographed sections.

The binding remains together in the photographed openings. The book has not been fully collated. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and condition.
