The book constitutes an excellent history of the 40th Virginia Infantry including details of its formation, descriptions of battles and campaigns, biographical sketches of key leaders, statistical information, specifics on individual soldiers in the command, a unit roster, and wonderful maps, illustrations and photographs. The book contains a unit roster with the Civil War service details of each officer and solider. The 40th Virginia Infantry was composed almost without exception of men drawn from the Northern neck of Virginia.

Seven of the regiment's ten companies were from either Northnumberland or Lancaster counties, and the other three were made up of men from Westmoreland and Richmond. For more than a year at the beginning of the war, the 40th Virginia was stationed in or near its home country, without seeing any substantial action. That quietude was shattered during the summer of 1862. As part of the famed Field-Heth-Brockenbrough-Walker Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia, the 40th was in the forefront of battle through that victorious summer. In the Seven Days Campaign alone, the regiment suffered about 200 casualties, 44 of them killed.

After taking bitter losses - nearly 50% of its strength - in a successful charge at Chancellorsville, the 40th Virginia went with the army to Gettysburg in 1863 in a weakened condition. On the first day at Gettysburg, the regiment contributed to the Confederate triumph west of town at the cost of even more losses. On the third day the 40th was at the exposed far left flank of the mighty Confederate assault and left in the field in a fashion which caused criticism by other Southerners. This book presents heretofore unpublished primary sources which shed light on the matter.

At Falling Waters, on the way home from Gettysburg, a large proportion of the survivors of the 40th Virginia was captured. The 40th Virginia found grimly and with distinction through the 1864 campaign in central Virginia and in the grinding encounters south of Petersburg as the war drew to a close. At Appomattox, the survivors of the 40th Virginia could look back on the death of more than one-fifth of their number: 113 men had been killed; 119 more had died of disease; and more than half of the men in the regiment had been casualties.
