The first volume gives short histories of infantry and cavalry units in both the Confederate and Union militaries, beginning with the Provisional Army of Tennessee, organized in June 1861 when Tennessee declared itself an independent republic. Each unit has the date it was organized, its field officers, and a short account of its location and battles. The second volume is vast alphabetical roster of all documented personnel who served in either the Tennessee Confederate or Federal organizations.
For each man is normally recorded last name, first name, middle initial, his highest recorded rank, and the company and regiment (or other unit designation) in which he served.
