Life of Pauline Cushman Celebrated Union Spy and Scout Civil War Rare 1889. 1889 1st Keystone Edition Publishing Company Edition of "Pauline Cushman the Celebrated Union Spy and Scout". 133 year old book in very good condition. Rare, beautifully crafted cover design with gold gilded background lettering frontispiece and facsimile signature and several other illustrations throughout the book. Name written in inside page, and a small tear in the beginning. The binding is well intact. I do my best to accurately described all items. Sometimes, it takes a day or two for tracking to start registering. Pauline Cushman (Born Harriet Wood) was an actress and spy for the Union Army. While touring with a theatrical troupe in Union-controlled Louisville, Kentucky, she was paid to toast Confederate President Jefferson Davis after a performance. The theater fired her, but she had other ideas. She had decided to ingratiate herself with the rebels by making the toast, while offering her services to the Union as a spy.

By fraternizing with the rebel military commanders, she managed to conceal battle plans and drawings in her shoes. This book outlines here activities as a spy, active in the western theater. She eventually was caught and brought before Confederate General Braxton Bragg, tried by a military court, and sentenced to death. It is said that she was saved three days before her hanging by the invasion of the area by Union troops. She was awarded the rank of Brevet-Major by General Garfield, commended by President Lincoln for her service to the union cause, and became known as Miss Major Cushman.

By the end of the war in 1865 she was touring the country giving lectures on her exploits as a spy. A friend, Ferdinand Sarmiento, wrote this biography of her extraordinary exploits as a spy. Upon her death the Grand Army of the Republic, recalled her service at her funeral, "Major Cushman's remains now rest in Officer's Circle at the Presidio's National Cemetery in San Francisco, recognizing her service as a "Union Spy.
