LIPPINCOTT & COMPANY, PHILADELPHIA, IN 1861 This original, antique book, published the first year of the American Civil War, is the original Civil War Field Artillery Manual. The manual covers all aspects of Field Artillery and governs the training and employment of artillery during the war. The book includes all aspects of the organization, material, and service of the artillery, tactical instruction on artillery use and employment, and the school of the piece, battery, and batteries which address how to employ artillery and the commands and processed used in movement and employment.

It contains instruction on the use of the single piece, multiple pieces and formations of artillery. The book is organized into five parts: Part I: Organization, Materiel, and Service Part II: Tactical Instruction Part III: School of the Piece Part IV: School of the Section Part V: School of the Battery THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, antique book is in nice overall condition. It comes protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket (see photo #3). The book is printed in brown, textured covers with gold lettering on the spine and decorative, cover highlights. The book has solid binding throughout.

The exterior is clean with light edge chipping to the spine tips and corners. There is a Peabody Library label on the front cover with instruction about the regulations of the library. The interior is clean and the pages are in nice condition. They have no writing, smudging, or foxing except on the end pages where there appears to be dark residue from where a dust jacket may have been placed. There is a pasteboard on the front, inside cover as well.

The title page has a small library number in ink and a lightly impressed library stamp, and the inside, rear cover has a library pocket. I found no other library markings. The spine lettering has faded some, but can still be read. The book contains 88 illustrated plates. There is a small hole on the last blank, end page of the book.

Overall, it's a nice, clean, tight, original, uncommon Civil War manual for Field Artillery. OFFICIAL ARTILLERY MANUAL OF THE CIVIL WAR.
