The book provides a Preface, Introduction and then provides an extensive Preliminary Narration which includes a narrative of the Outbreak of the Civil War, a sketch of the Civil War governor for the state, and history the First Volunteer Company, the Three Month's Regiments, the Route through Annapolis, the Occupation of Baltimore, the Three Year's Regiments, the early Major-Generals, the Battles of 1861, the filling up of the Regiments, the Naval Service, Operations in North Carolina, during the Peninsular Campaign, at the Department of the Gulf, operations of the Army of Virginia Under General Pope, the Antietam Campaign, the Fredericksburg Campaign, Massachusetts and the Colored Troops, Operations in the Department of the South, the Chancellorsville Campaign, the Gettysburg Campaign, the Army of the Cumberland, the Shenandoah Campaigns, the Final Campaigns in Virginia, Massachusetts Enlistments and Casualties, Massachusetts in the Field and the Return of the Flags. The book then provides a condensed history of each Regiment and unit in the Civil War and contains charts listing all the Massachusetts Officers and Soldiers killed in action, a list of all who died of wounds, a list of those who died as prisoners, Statistical Summaries of Troops furnished by Massachusetts, lists of Regimental flags preserved at the Massachusetts State House, List of Authorities citied in the Preliminary Narrative, and Index of Battles mentioned in the Preliminary Narrative, Index of Regiments mentioned in the book set, and Index of persons mentioned in the book set.

Volume II includes various Lists and Records including of the Massachusetts Naval Officers, General Officers including biographical sketches, Field Officers, Line Officers, Medical Officers, and Chaplains in Massachusetts Regiments. It provides Lists and Records of Massachusetts Officers in Regular Army and Staff Corps, Officer in Regiments of Other States, Officers in the U. Colored Troops, and Officers, Soldiers and Sailors receiving Medals of Honor. Massachusetts sent a total of 159,165 men to serve in the war.

Of these, 133,002 served in the Union army and 26,163 served in the navy. The army units raised in Massachusetts consisted of 62 regiments of infantry, six regiments of cavalry, 16 batteries of light artillery, four regiments of heavy artillery, two companies of sharpshooters, and a handful of unattached battalions and 26 unattached companies.

Handsomely bound in navy blue, cloth covers with exceptionally bright, impressed, gold lettering on the spine, the books are sharp, bright and clean. The exteriors of both books are in fine condition. The exteriors have no bumping, rubbing or edge wear.

The interiors are in fine condition as well. The books have no writing, smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboard or other markings.

This is not an ex-library book set. The pages are clean and in excellent condition. The books have solid binding throughout with no looseness or lean. The front hinge of volume one has a lite paper crack, but all hinges are solid and the other hinges are in fine condition with no cracking.
