A Personal History of Ulysses S. Grant (Hartford, American Publishing Co, 1868). 26 engravings, 8 facsimiles of letters from Grant, Lincoln, Sheridan, Buckner, Lee, 6 maps with a portrait and sketch of Schuyler Colfax, by Albert Richardson. The interior has what may be mildew stains on many pages, likely from the book not always being stored in a dry environment, but the pages are solid, not cracking or torn. Original leather binding is remarkably strong and intact, with attractive spine label that has faded.
The spine is well attached with some slight weakness along both outside edges which are more brittle and wear as noted in photos at the top and bottom of spine. The cover corners have some wear, but not nearly what a 150 yr old book often looks like. Appears the book was stored longer on its back than standing up on a bookshelf. Nonetheless, the book presents well on a shelf for its age and significance.
Finally, there is what appears to be a name written on the second page of Andrew McMahon, dated Oct. 8th, 1868, possibly the original owner. Obviously, I didn't know him, nor is he a relative. This book was given to me by my grandmother who passed away several years ago two weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Used/Rare edition book about Ulysses S.
