The author was a Captain in Co. This unit was a part of Brockenbrough's Brigade, General A. Hill's Light Division, Stonewall Jackson's Corps, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

A memoir of a Confederate officer who joined the colors as an enlisted man, quickly became a sergeant and then a lieutenant. At Gettysburg, he was a Captain in Brockenbough's Brigade. Dunaway fought in all of the major battles up to and including Gettysburg where he was captured. After the war he became a minister. Dunaway joined the rebel army in the "Northern Neck" area of VA with the 47th VA as LT.

Later, a captaincy opened in the 40th VA of the same brigade. Their first fighting was on the Peninsula and the 7 days. With Brockenboughs brigade of AP Hills (Light) Division they fought at 2nd Manassas, Antietam, Fredrickburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

Captured at Falling waters in Mid-July 1863, Dunaway finished out the war at the Johnson Island Prison near Sandusky OH. Amazon Review: Written by a Confederate infantryman who volunteered for his local regiment at the outset of the Civil War, Dunaway provides a no holds barred account of the life and privations of an infantryman fighting alongside friends and acquaintances from the same school, university and townships of his County. As only an eyewitness and protagonist can describe it, skirmishes, ambushes, and battles are described graphically and have left us with a real historical document that captures the time forever.
