The book presents a comprehensive history of the unit during the American Civil War from it's muster in, throughout it's military service and battles, to its muster out, with additional, special chapters or particular areas. The 21st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was mustered into service on August 23, 1861. After garrison duty at the U. Naval Academy, the regiment served with the Coast Division commanded by General Burnside. The Coast Division was deployed in January 1862 for operations on the coast of North Carolina, and participated in the Battle of Roanoke Island, Camden and the Battle of New Bern among other engagements. Burnside's division was recalled to Virginia in July 1862. The 21st Massachusetts was then attached to the Army of the Potomac and participated in several of the largest battles of the Civil War, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of South Mountain, Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. The most devastating engagement of the war for the 21st was the Battle of Chantilly, fought on September 1, 1862, during which the unit suffered 35 percent casualties. From March 1863 to January 1864, the 21st served with Burnside in the Department of Ohio, seeing action in Kentucky and during the Campaign in East Tennessee. If fought at the Battles of Blue Springs and Campbell's Station, and at the Siege of Knoxville in 1863. In May 1864, the regiment rejoined the Army of the Potomac, participating in General Grant's Overland Campaign including the Battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Shady Grove Road, Bethesda Church at Cold Harbor, and various assaults and the Siege at Petersburg, at Weldon Railroad, and at Popular Spring Church in 1864. By the end of its three years of service, the 21st Massachusetts had been reduced from 1,000 men to fewer than 100.

Those of the 21st who chose to re-enlist at the end of their initial three-year commitment were eventually consolidated with the 36th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on October 21, 1864. This is a brand new, unread, pristine condition book. It is bound in brown covers with bright gold, embossed lettering on the spine.

The book has no wear or shortcomings. There isn't a mark in the book and the pages are bright white and clean. The book contains a comprehensive unit roster with details of the Civil War service of each soldier. The book is illustrated with portraits.

The book measures 9 1/2 inches by 7 inches by 1 3/4 inches. An excellent condition, brand new book on this hard-fought, Civil War unit. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE - CONDITION This original, first edition book is in nice overall condition. The book is clean and tight. The book is bound in brown, textured covers with the gold, impressed image of a bomb exploding on the cover and bright gold lettering on the spine.

The exterior is has no bumping; it has light rubbing and a small scratch to the upper, spine through the lettering as shown. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The book has no other writing, smudging, foxing or pasteboards. There is a stamp, "The Allen Whitfield Harden Civil War Historical Collection, " at the upper corner of the first white, blank page, but there are no other stamps. It is not an ex-library book.

The book contains a full-page, engraved frontispiece illustration of Major General Reno, and another of General Burnside later in the book, both with tissue guards. The book contains 10 battle maps and plans, scenes, etc. It contains 7 pages of introductory material and 502 pages.

It contains a comprehensive roster of the unit with the details of each soldier's Civil War service. The hinges have paper cracks, but are firm and the book has no looseness or lean. Overall this is a nice book - an excellent and comprehensive history of this Civil War unit that fought in multiple states during the Civil War.
