A Civil War Era Photographically Illustrated Autograph Book, 1861-64. Title: A Civil War Era Photographically Illustrated Autograph Book, 1861-64 Publication: (New England: 1861-64). Maroon decorated morocco over boards, stamped in gold and in blind, blue patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. Contains 55 salted paper and albumen oval and square vignette portraits, mostly of young men and women, including a few older persons and a few children. Many portraits are signed by the person photographed beneath the images "Yours truly" etc.

; a few appear to have been identified by the owner of the album; and several are unidentified. Further illustrated with three pencil drawings, two of which contain one portrait mounted within the drawings. The boards are darkened, wear at the joints and corners, a few small light stains, a few small remnants of a botanical flower on back fly leaf, one pencil drawing lacks a second vignette portrait, very good.

The album opens with a dramatic, full-page pencil drawing of the American coat of arms with an eagle bearing the motto: "God Save / The Union - Our Country / Right or Wrong". This is followed by two portraits signed "Your Brother Henry" and Your Brother Howard Taylor, Sept. 1861", and another portrait signed "Annie Sturdivant. Most of the identified portraits date from 1861, including one loose or laid in portrait signed C.

Also notable is a pencil drawing of an chandelier-like object displaying two portraits (one of which is missing) identified with initials, and another ornate drawing featuring a portrait of G. It is likely that most of the photographed persons are from Maine or elsewhere in New England.
