A valuable source of New Jersey Civil War history, the book is comprehensive and detailed in its scope. The book presents an overview of the causes of the rebellion and the relation of slavery to the war.

It describes the state of unpreparedness of the state, the mustering and sending of troops forward, the commencement of hostilities, and the many battles and campaigns in which New Jersey forces participated. Perhaps the finest aspect of the book, however, is its collection of detailed, comprehensive unit histories of the New Jersey units that participated in the Civil War. All the Regiments and other military organizations of the war are included. Each unit is addressed separately and the unit history is provided for all the infantry, cavalry, artillery, and other units. These come complete with detailed unit rosters of each unit and details of the service of the soldiers in the unit. New Jersey provided troops, equipment and leaders during the war and they played an important part in the war. These included key leaders such as Philip Kearny, George McClellan, Torbert, McAllister, Ramsey, Sewell, Kilpatrick, Heckman, Mindil, Taylor, Trux, Hall, Campbell, Harker, Bayard, Price, Revere, Montgomery, Birney and others. These have detailed biographical sketches in the book.

In addition to these unit histories, the book also includes special topics including legislation of the War period, popular sympathy with the cause, attitudes of the Church, instance of gallantry and a chapter of chaplains and surgeons and their service. Over 88,000 soldiers from New Jersey were part of several infantry and cavalry regiments that participated in the war. In total, 52 regiments were created by New Jersey during this war. And 23,116 of those soldiers served in the Army of the Potomac. New Jersey was one of the few states to vote for Stephen Douglas instead of Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election.

New Jersey also gave its electoral votes to George McClellan when he ran for President against Lincoln in the 1864 election, being the only free state that rejected Lincoln twice. McClellan later became the governor of New Jersey, from 1878 to 1881. The book is in excellent overall condition. The book is clean and has solid binding throughout. The exterior is clean and the book has no bumping, rubbing or edge wear.

The lettering remains very readable with some stamp darkening as shown. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. There is a large, antique signature in pencil on one of the front, blank pages. The book has no other writing. It has no foxing, smudging or stamps. It has some very light smudging a few pages, but nothing serious. This is not an ex-library book.

The book has solid binding throughout; both hinges are fine. Marbled end pages as shown. The book contains a frontispiece illustration of Major General Philip Kearney in uniform.
