John Codman Ropes began this series, but died and Colonel Livermore completed this set. The books cover in extensive detail the campaigns of both the Eastern and Western Theaters as well as Naval activities.

This narrative is annotate for each reference. The book discusses the causes which brought on the war, and focuses on the campaigns and military operations of the war.

The major campaigns of Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Iuka, Corinth, along the Rappahannock, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and more are all included. The books contain charts, an index of persons, and a general index.

It contains a series of battle field maps inside each book as well as an excellent condition collection of foldout maps bound in to the back of each book and all being in fine condition. These well-written and comprehensive book sets provide an wonderful, vintage account of the start of the war, including many of its major battles and campaigns. It is supported by multi-color, foldout maps.

THIS BOOK SET IS IN FINE - CONDITION These two wonderful, antiquarian book sets (four-volumes in all) are in excellent condition and all books are protected in clear, Mylar dust jackets. Bound in Navy blue oil cloth with embossed gold lettering on the spine, both books are clean and have solid binding.

The exterior of both books have no bumping or discernible edge wear, but have some light rubbing. The gold lettering on all four books is sharp and bright. The interiors of all four books are in excellent condition, except that there is a matching prior owner name/address/date on the front end page of each book and a summary sheet tipped in. The books have no other writing.

The pages have now smudging, stamps, foxing, or other markings. This is not an ex-library book set. All books have fine, solid binding with no looseness or lean. All eight hinges are fine. The books have numerous maps printed inside the books, and also contain a series of large, foldout maps in the back of the books.
