Published by George & Charles Merriam of Springfield, Massachusetts, this represents one of the last great pre-Civil War printings of Webster's monumental work and one of the earliest large unabridged Merriam issues. The book includes the printed portrait plate of Webster preceding the title page and the full 1858 dated imprint. It embodies mid-19th-century American craftsmanship-heavy paper stock, tight three-column type, and full-leather binding with raised spine bands. Original full-leather boards with raised bands show heavy rubbing, corner wear, and spine label loss.

The hinges are cracked but still holding; interior pages exhibit toning, foxing, water staining, small tears, and some old linen or tape edge repairs. Text remains complete and legible.

There are ownership inscriptions on endpapers that add provenance and period character. A substantial early American volume ideal for collectors, libraries, or historical display-a genuine pre-Civil War artifact of the Merriam-Webster legacy. Weight: 6 lb 12 oz (rough).
