AUGUST 1862 - MAY 1863. This sale is for an original 1887 FIRST EDITION of " RECORD OF THE SERVICE OF THE FORTY-FOURTH MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER MILITIA " assembled by a committee of regimental members. YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!! The Forty-fourth Massachusetts Regiment was largely made up of clerks and students, who, after the War, found themselves for the most part living in the Boston area as professionals and businessmen.
This proximity allowed for the easy formation of an Association for these servicemen who enjoyed well attended meetings and reunions regularly. At an annual meeting in 1879, the idea of compiling and publishing a record of the regimental history was discussed and a committee formed to head up the task. Pulling from letters, diaries, sketches, and personal accounts provided by members of the regiment, as well as newspaper articles, records from the Department of War, and other related sources, the committee assembled this work at great, and admittedly somewhat disproportionate lengths. The committee presented this work humbly as, the members of the Forty-Fourth, as only nine month's soldiers, recognize that they should speak modestly of their services...
The service included a representative variety of the experience of the American volunteer during a winter campaign - camp life, provost-duty, marches, skirmishes, a siege, battles serious enough to test the courage of the regiment, exposure, hardship, and losses by disease and in action. " They urge that, should this work fall into the hands of other servicemen not among their ranks, that older and more seasoned veterans "will not begrudge us these modest reminiscences. The Forty-Fourth saw extensive action in North Carolina, mustered in and out for Burnside's Carolina Campaign. The book contains numerous photographs of members, other illustrations, and maps, as well as a roster of the unit, medical records, and facsimile signatures. Topics include Camp Life, the Tarboro's March, the Plymouth Expedition, the Affair of Little Creek and Rawle's Mill, etc. This particular copy has been bound upside-down and backwards to its cover, making it unique to other copies of this book.
