Antique Diary Scrapbook Peterborough NH Monadnock Region Obituaries Civil War

  

Wonderful scrapbook / diary assembled by someone presumably from Peterborough, New Hampshire. Contains numerous obituary clippings, some wedding clippings, and some miscellaneous, many annotations, plus diary entries. It seems likely, given the long span of time covered, that some of the clippings were saved in the family's archive before eventually gathered in the scrapbook which was then filled over the years.

I haven't looked at it closely enough to determine whether the compiler was a man or a woman though my hunch is that it's a man. The notices of deaths and marriages are richly detailed. The compiler has often also pasted in the short notices of gratitude from the deceased's survivors thanking people for their support. At least three of the deaths were by suicide and those accounts are also quite detailed. Another person, a child, died by drowning.

If not from Peterborough almost all have some connection to the town. Other articles include one with a photo titled "Peterborough Cornet Band of 1873;" an 1894 article titled "Oldest Twins" about Peterborough sisters Elvira and Elmira Fife, born in 1811 and thought to be the oldest twins in America; and an 1861 article titled "The New Company" which lists the names, ages and occupations of the men who had enlisted in the Union Army at the newly opened recruiting office in Peterborough. The compiler layered articles on some pages and often annotated announcements with later events - births, deaths, etc.

Dated journal entries date are from the 1920s to 1930s.

Births and deaths are noted here too. Other entries concern medical problems, weather, improvements to the house and farm, a flood in 1936, the telephone put in in 1920, etc. Many of the entries read like a compilation of important dates in a life - as though the compiler was recording the makings of a timeline (I can relate - my plan when I go through my files is to make my own timeline of my life). There are a number of short entries about World War I that start out with Boys left for war Concord NH & Westfield, July 27, 1917. All in all a fascinating read! Marbled boards, leather spine and edges.

Spine has wear, fraying at end. Some pages detached, two pages are stuck together at the bottom and I've not tried to separate them. More Genealogy & Local History Books.
