LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, IN 1999 Out-of-Print Book This book constitutes an excellent history of the Civil War as it occurred in the Southside counties of Virginia. The counties of Southside Virginia were indistinguishable to the Southern states themselves. Some were extremely loyal and wanted to remain within the Union, while others wanted to immediately secede and form a new country.
When in July 1861, Governor John Letcher did send his call out for troops, Militia Units that had been formed in previous years, from throughout Southside Virginia, marched off to answer the call to defend their homes and state. Artillery, Infantry, and Cavalry companies served with distinction in both the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee. They would see action at the greatest battles of the war to include Fredericksburg, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and the retreat from Petersburg. These companies defended their homes and states until overwhelmed by force of arms at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on the 9th of April 1865. The final Southside unit did not surrender until General Joseph E.
Johnston did do on April 26th, 1865 in Orange County, North Carolina. The book contains unit histories of these units. Complete with a list of units by county, list of units by regiment, list of units by nickname, and summary of engagements in which regiments participated.
