Schurz was the friend and champion of Abraham Lincoln. "I soon felt, " he wrote after witnessing the debates with Douglas, as if I had known him all my life. " Campaigning for the Republican party on the eve of the Civil War, Schurz penetrated the façade of Senator Sumner, the man who knew "there is no other side." He also guessed the depth of the frustration of William Henry Seward, who was furious that "a little Illinois lawyer had beat him to the White House. Finally, he sized up Salmon P. Chase, "one of the novelist victims" of the Presidential disease. Do they think I'm a damned fool? Asked Sherman when his name was mentioned as a Presidential candidate.
They know I don't know anything about politics. In the very last chapter Schurz calls on Bismarck, and over cigars and wine listen to the plotting that led to the War of 1870. Schurz was no stranger to the political world of his native Germany. He was then only 21, but a hero throughout Europe.Coming to America in 1852 to build his life anew, he was already well acquainted with the men who were shaping the 19th century. In Cologne, he had met Karl Marx and was quickly disenchanted.
"I have, " he said, never seen a man whose bearing was so provoking. " In Zurich, he had come across Richard Wagner. " And in London he had listened to Kossuth "who granted audiences like a prince.
