1856 Civil War US Navy New Testament Bible ABS KJV antique leather book military

  
For sale is an 1856 New Testament owned and carried by Commodore Samuel Lockwood, US Navy before and during the US Civil War. 8vo, about 8" x 5" x 1 1/4. Condition is G to VG overall. Recently rebacked using the original brown full sheep leather boards. Boards scuffed, moderate shelf wear to board edges. Bookbinding leather at this time was quite low quality, so this binding in great shape considering the materials and how often it was used.

Spine is nice and firm, paper is in great condition with minimal staining and foxing. He began his career in 1820 fighting pirates in the Mediterranean, serving on three of the six original frigates built by the US Navy in 1796 (Congress, Constellation, and Constitution).

He served in the Mexican-American war, and afterward served in California where he commanded a sloop in the Pacific Squadron. He was promoted to Commodore just before the Civil War, where he commanded a steamer in the Union blockade of the Confederacy, specifically North Carolina and Virginia.

He came out of retirement in the 1880s to serve in the Phillipines during the Spanish-American War. Yale University is in possession of his logs, papers, and correspondence from throughout his career.

In addition to two of Samuel's signatures, a note from his daughter when she recieved this book from him in 1865 certainly suggests he owned this book during the Civil War, perhaps as early as his days in the Pacific (1858-60). I have provided an image of an engraving of him, which I do not own, nor will a physical copy be included in the listing. It includes a sample of his signature and handwriting, but bear in mind he was much older writing the scanned sample. I've done my best to accurately and honestly describe and photograph this item.
