Book contains three portraits, including frontispiece, of John B. Gordon at different ages, all with tissue-guards. Gordon was an attorney and a planter, who rose from relative obscurity to become a senior general in the Confederate States Army by the end of the Civil War. Gordon was a politician in the postwar years, who strongly opposed Reconstruction during the late 1860s. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected by the state legislature and served as a U.
Senator, from 1875 to 1881, and again from 1891 to 1897. He also was elected as the 53rd Governor of Georgia, serving from 1886 to 1890.
Reminiscences of the Civil War was first published in 1903, a year before his death in 1904. CONDITION: The book is in overall Near Fine condition, covered in the publisher's dark blue cloth. With gilt-stamped lettering on the front and spine, along with a gilt United Confederate Veterans seal on the front cover. Boards and spine have minor bookshelf scuffing, with the rest of the book in Fine condition. INSCRIPTIONS: Volume has a personal inscription, written in pencil on the first page after the front cover, which reads: Jno.
